No, you don't need Winamp Pro to rip. You can rip with the free version. You
have two limitations however:
1. You cannot rip in mp3.
2. You are limited to an 8x ripping speed.
The Pro version allows ripping in mp3 and unlimited ripping speed. I ripped
around 600 CDs with the free version though, so I'm quite sure you don't
need the Pro version if you are willing to accept the limitations. I finally
bought it because I wanted mp3 ripping.
