Your question is slightly confusing because the subject line says "GW
Connect" and your message says "Skype", so I'm not sure which you
want to use for your text chat.
In the case of GW Connect, if someone starts a text chat with you,
the window with the conversation in it should come up, and when you
alt+tab to that window, you should be in the edit box to write
something by default, and pressing enter will send the message you
write. Shift+tab in that window will get you to the "history" of
what has been said so far, and you should maximise the window if it
doesn't read to you with the arrow keys.
To start a conversation, arrow down your contact list to the person
you want to speak to, press the context menu (application) key, and
"chat" will be in that menu, along with "call" ETC.
