Heck, had I the space and the financial means my apartment would feature an
Apple 2E with an Echo synthesizer. Those were some fond memories...

Subject: WinAmp - Maybe a Tempest in a Teapot!

I had WinAmp a few years ago, and I enjoyed it on my old Windows 98 box; but I
didn't keep it updated. Since it is still accessible, I think I will buy a key
and use it again. Since I am running two computers, I would buy two licenses.

So there won't be any updates after December; but if it works, then we can
continue using it. Really, if we want to talk about "ancient" software or
hardware, then I have a couple of "oldies" around my house. For a Word
Processor, I am still using PC Write - an old word-processor program running on
DOS 6.22. I also use Cakewalk in the latest version for DOS 6.22 for my MIDI
operations. Going back one step into "antiquity", I have a working TRS-80
Model III which runs Orchestra-90, a synthesizer made to run on the TRS-80.
When I boot it up, it shows the prompt "Linda Carol Here." (I named some of my
computers with girls' names.) Anytime I want a particular pipe-organ "reed
sound" which I developed for that synthesizer, I can count on Linda Carol to
play it for me. All the above is to show that the discontinuance of a
product's support does not mean that you MUST trash the product. My house is
filled with many products which are not currently supported. If they work,
then USE
THEM! I believe that Window-Eyes has set files to work with WinAmp. The
only two concerns I have would be security patches and usability of WinAmp on
the next version of Windows. But when I poked around the WinAmp website, I
thought I saw something about support for Windows 8. If it is compatible with
Windows 8, I imagine that GW Micro will try to support it, knowing that it is a
popular program among our ranks.

I have held for a long time that if any given product - whatever it be - meets
my need, I'll continue using it unless I find something better. So let's keep
the WinAmp download site humming for now!
