Does 8.1 offer any substantive enhancements in relation to its predecessor?

Hi Guys,
Yesterday I had a brand new laptop of a friend of mine with windows
8.1 and when I installed the GW-connect it refuse to run properly it
is giving me some sort of initialisation error. Does someone manage
to run gw-connect on windows 8.1?
