I have used this kind of equipment, to connect an older Braille display to a
modern computer, which did not have a Com-port. I bought two different
converter cables, one in a local store for a small fortune, the other on EBay
for a fairly low price. It turned out that the one bought locally, was of no
use. The cheap one from EBay, works quite well. From what I have experienced,
and what has been told from other users, the main thing to be ware of, is that
the converter should have an FTDI chipset. If it does, apparently you should be
pretty good to go. I haven't tested my converter under Windows8, so can't tell
if it works there. But on the older machine with XP, it works pretty OK.

Subject: Anyone know of a com port to USB adapter?

Does anyone know of a serial to USB adapter that will allow an older external
synthesizer, I don’t know which one, just that it was new somewhere in the
early to mid 1990s, to work with a brand new computer? My uncle has severe
tinnitus as well as RP and he used this synthesizer during all of these years
as his hearing problems got worse and now he finds that he is accustomed to
comprehending it even on his worst hearing days, translating the garble of
sound easily after many years of using the device. He has been trying to find a
synthesizer among all of those that come with Window Eyes that he can get used
to, but it just doesn’t seem to be working. I just finished recording a bunch
of clips of the Vocalizer voices on the off chance that they might succed where
the others have failed, but I don’t hold out a lot of hope that any of them
will work any better since it really isn’t an issue of the quality of the
voice, but rather a matter of being ab
le to comprehend meaning through the loud roaring of tinnitus. So, I am hoping
we can find a way to allow him to continue to use what he is used to. I wish I
could provide more info on which brand and model he is using, but I am doing
all of this over the phone since he lives a good ways up in the mountains from
where I live and there are two family crises that have hit, one down here and
one up there complicating things. I don’t know why things always work out so
that the bad stuff always hit in clusters, but it always seems to work out that
way. I

  Thanks for any information.

  Regards,

  Chris
