IMPORTANT NOTE: If you plan to purchase Windows 8, DO NOT PURCHASE WINDOWS 8 RT. IT WILL NOT WORK WITH WINDOW-EYES.

Subject: Windows 8 Tablet experience

Colleagues:

I purchased the Dell Venue 8-Pro tablet with 64 gig of storage for $300 at Micro Center. Costco also offers them at a good price in their stores. I believe it is technically similar to the 11" version mentioned in an earlier message.

I am pleased to report that it works very well with Window-Eyes 8.4

For $300 including MS Office Home and Student it is all set to install WinEyes after setup.

Note, that using MS Narrator and Windows RT, for setup, configuration can be conducted independently with speech. It is best to have an Outlook address or MS account set up in advance. Also note, it may be advisable to have a reader provide the Office registration number before setup.

I used a USB OTG cable and USB hub, to connect a keyboard and thumb drive with WinEyes on it. An additional $25 for these accessories.

I chose the Dell rather than the Lenovo because it has a Windows key, which is used, along with Volume Up to start Narrator.

I am running Thunderbird, Firefox and Jarte in addition to the Office H&S 2013. I have observed that in general terms the machine is surprisingly responsive, once the Windows 8 voice is changed. The keyboard latency of that synthesizer makes it very difficult to use.

I am purchasing a Bluetooth keyboard/folio, $35 from Amazon to complete the package.

As NFB Chapter president in a poor community, I am very encouraged that it may be a very useful alternative to old XP machines which reach the end of the line on April 9. Many of our members struggle to obtain up to date technology. Additionally the size and convenience of a tablet will allow those who do not have network access to take it to a Starbucks, Library, community room or other WIFI equipped location for e-mail etc.
