I used GoldWave to record my records and cassettes to my hard drive. I
understand that listers have used Audacity to do this. If you use a cassette
deck, you will need to connect to your computer through a preamp. I used a
preamp for my records since my turn table had no volume. I used a cassette
player to do my cassettes so I didn't need the preamp for this. There are
vinyl to MP3 USB converters for records and cassettes which can be used to
record your media to your computer. I actually used one of these to record
my 78s since my turn table only had 33 and 45 speeds. I did not purchase a
cassette converter for reasons mentioned above. There are other listers who
have used many more recordding features than I have. They also have done
serious editing. Whichever program you use, however, you will need to split
your recording into tracks. Thus, you can put them on CDs or play them on
your computer or other media players. If not, you would have one big file
which isn't very handy. I can help more off list if desired.

Subject: Digitizing Audiocassettes Using Window-Eyes-Compatible Software

Hello, everyone.

I am looking into ways of getting material on audiocassettes converted
to MP3 or another suitable format. Has anyone purchased special
cassette decks that will do so? Am I tied into using a particular
program to do the digitizing with such a deck? Alternatively, I realize
I could use a conventional tape player to send the output of the audio
to my computer. I am not familiar with using audio software, so the
simpler the recording package, the better. I don't think I'll be doing
a lot of editing; I will just convert the tracks as they are.

Thank you for all help.

Craig
