It also does not work with 8.1 last I checked.

Hi.  I think it's really important to point out that the native Skype
program wasn't even fully inaccessible, unusable, or however you want to put
it.  Yes, gw connect is the best option for voice calls, file sharing and
text chats.  If you want to do video stuff too, you'll have 
to use the native skype because GW connect doesn't allow video calls.   
The skype kit that GW uses doesn't allow video.  So it's a choice you'll
have to make there.
