Can anyone explain the differences among the results produced by

Ctrl-m,
Alt-h m, and
Alt-s s.

When I had Outlook 2007, Ctrl-m would both bring down any messages on the
ISP's server, and send out any messages remaining in the Outbox.

With 2013 I'm finding that routinely, when I first launch Outlook in the
morning, one or two messages come down. Ctrl-m usually doesn't do a thing,
except produce the usual series of ascending tones and progress reports,
while saying that it is syncing the various folders.

The only way I can get to see all of my mail is to shut down Outlook and
immediately bring it up again. Then between 30 to 50 messages appear. I
don't know about the other keystroke combos mentioned above, but discovered
them while scowering the ribbon for a possible solution. I'd really like to
cure Outlook of holding onto my messages until it thinks it's time to show
them to me, whenever that is! Hopefully someone knows how to loosen its
bowels.]
