I too have used ReadyNAS from NetGear, and it's been very good.

Mine is very old, and so things could be different now.  There was one
program meant to aid installation I think, which was written in Java I
believe (and so wasn't accessible).  It basically helped you find the box on
your network; if you knew how to do that, then you could skip using this
program. 

As I said, it may not even be packaged with such a program any longer, and
as  Chris said, the configuration interface is all web based and is pretty
good.

I have used the netgear readynas.  It isn't a drive, it is a box where 
you put two or more drives.
The interface is web based and is accessible.
