Yes, I have noticed the same thing, and found no real solution.
Sorry to say, I have been running Thunderbird for a couple of months, on
my Win8.1 machine, but getting close to find another mailing client. WE
and Thunderbird does not cooperate all that great, I find. Like you, I
have many times ended up using the editor of Notepad to compose my
messages, specially because any of the cursor keys and delete forward or
backward only processes a DING on me, in the Thunderbird editor. Simply
not good enough, and the TBEnhance seems to have its own issues.

Hi, I am experiencing a minor annoyance when using Thunderbird. If I'm
composing a message and I use the read to end feature, Window-Eyes
continuously reads the last line of the message. This is usually my
signature and is usually something like, Thanks, Dave. So it just
reads those two words over and over and over and...yeah, like I said,
it's minor but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I
have been composing messages in another editor like Jarte or notepad
and then pasting them to avoid the issue. Ideas?
Thanks, Dave
