Steve, The standard calendar view works fine and all works as designed; at least as far as I know after many years of using it.
If I make the Iphone calendar list the active calendar I do get shown details on my Iphone calendar. However, if, for example, I add a new appointment while in the active Iphone calendar view using the GW Calendar view it appears to work. However, I can then not see that appointment in the Iphone calendar view with the GW app. I then closed Outlook down, to avoid any confusion when opening up the GW Calendar appp. I then re-open Outlook. The new test appointment I had set up on my Iphone active calendar has been entered into the standard Outlook calendar rather than the Iphone calendar. Please let me know if you need any more info. You will need to ensure your phone calendar is active, after which point you can adjust it to your liking. If it fails, please also verify whether you can make changes in the native calendar interface as well.
