This is the same in Windows 7 to 8. Try the following program:

http://www.clamwin.com/ 

Or just use the built in Windows 8 version. I wouldn't be not allowing a
scan at start up. This is the first place that you will get targeted by a
virus.

I found several things in the start up menu which were not needed.  I 
had not been able to get to the right place before because I hadn't 
been using control tab.  This appears to be different in Win 8 to 
Win7.  Anyway, things seem to have improved.  I have vipre Internet 
security on the system which has caused problems in the past but now 
I don't allow it to run a scan at boot up.
