her win 7 is fully updated and the age of her pc which is also important.

First of all what version of we are you using? Also how old is your pc

Your experience is not mine with we 8.4 there are few crashes and it is
quite responsive.
Changing screen readers may not really solve the problem if it is in
your pc hardware or operating system.
