Or, he is using WE 7.5, and it may be that there's a bug fixed or features added in WE 8.4; this is very very likely.
Ted, if you don't want to buy the upgrade to find out if it's the issue, how about trying the free WE demo on another xp pc first? If you don't use another pc, you'll have to uninstall the demo and reinstall your 7.5 version after you're done trying it.
