If you highlight any icon on your desktop, hold down the Control key, and then press the spacebar, that icon will become unselected. Now, if you press the application key or Shift-F10, then press down arrow until you reach Sort, and then press right arrow to expand Sort, you'll get various ways to sort the desktop icons. By the way, the reason you unselected the icon in the first place was so that the whole desktop becomes the focus, rather than one icon.
