Similar issue in New Zealand. But - I am not being as proactive as your good
self.

It is certainly true that this is market driven: I for one hope that AI Squared
become more assertive about taking on FS, and for improving international
profiling of window-eyes. Hoping in this context that version nine of
Window-eyes is akin to Neil Armstrong's "one giant leap" f for screen readers.

Well, I don't know about the US, but here in the UK, most of the local councels
and other authorities, (Particularly education), normally go with just one
option, and don't look at anything else. It is mainly market driven, rather
than from a user perspective. However, I personally am trying to do something
about it, by seeing if I can become a Window-Eyes trainer, and there aren't
many of those in the UK.

An important point with respect to those who have little knowledge of what is
available and what is best suited.

Perhaps I should have been more specific in that the challenge is for those
doing assessments to take an open ended approach, and to be knowledgeable about
the range of options that are available. But: manufacturers and suppliers need
to also be proactive.

Best.

Hello Vaugn,
Yes, if you tried tomake the focus driver to work with Window-Eyes, Freedom
Scientific could sue you, as, technically, what you would be doing would be
reverse engineering. As far as I know, that activity is illegal, and many
license agreements forbid it.
In regards to your comments about agencies, I agree with you up to a point.
It is important to be able to evaluate things for yourself, however, beginners
(EG students or people who have just lost their sight), and people who are not
very technically minded, probably cannot research those products, so they have
to use the agencies.

I agree with this, but I bet that any attempt at "hacking" to support better
interaction with Window-eyes would result in legal action.

I certainly can't do it, but in the interests of being completely honest - the
thought has crossed my mind more than once.

In the business world, FS can do whatever it likes. Because - in the braille
display market, there are many products to choose from, Window-eyes users can
reject the Focus, but we need to be able to evaluate the alternatives. So that
we are not captured by agencies, we need to be proactive about researching and
obtaining devices to evaluate. I behave this way quite frequently.

A variation on my previous suggestion of locking the Focus out of
Woindow-eyes: it may be better if AI Squared reduced the number of displays it
supported, but actively worked with those manufacturers to improve the
interfaces with the preferred displays.

Hi;
I'm certainly not a programer but it would seem that someone could take a look
at the driver freedom scientific is using and just duplicate that info to work
with another screen reader. I no, if its so easy why don't I do it but it
would seem that a programmer could manage that. richard sent from my braille
