Stacey, before I reply to your question regarding calculating percentages on
the Voice Sense Calculator in the Utility Menu, please allow me to mention one
tip that Raul shared with me that I have found to be very useful.

Whenever you are unsure of how to execute a particular command, or, if you
don't know how to represent a certain symbol for a mathematical operation which
can be performed on the Voice Sense Calculator, you can receive instant, online
help for whatever program you are in. The context-sensitive, Online Help
Command is h-chord, or space-h (dots 1-2-5).

Now, there are two ways of calculating percentages.

1. If you wish to calculate sales tax for the price of a particular item, you
would first enter the price of the item (without sales tax), followed by the
"Plus" Sign for Addition (dots 3-4-6), followed by the sales tax percentage.
(To enter "Percentage", use dots 1-4-6 to represent the Nemeth Code symbol for
"Percent". Numbers should be written in the lower portion of the Braille cell
using dot 2, dot 3, dot 5, or dot 6.) For example, if you want to purchase a
telephone that currently costs $99.95 at Radio Shack, and, if the sales tax for
your particular county is, let's say, eight percent, you would perform the
following steps to solve this problem satisfactorily:
a. Enter $99.95 as 99 (dots 3-5, 3-5), followed by the decimal point (dots
4-6), followed by 95 (dots 3-5, 2-6).
b. Enter "Plus" (dots 3-4-6) to represent the mathematical operation for
Addition.
c. Finally, enter eight percent (the sales tax) as dots 2-3-6 for the digit 8,
followed by "Percent" (dots 1-4-6), and, finally, press "Enter" to find the
solution. The answer is $107.946 which, when rounded up to the next penny, is
$107.95.

2. To find the percentage of a given number (for example, to calculate 25
percent of 100, please follow these two steps:
a. Enter 100 as dot 2 (for 1), dots 3-5-6 (for the first 0), then dots 3-5-6
(for the second 0).
b. Then, enter the symbol for "Multiplied By", (which is dots 1-6).
c. Finally, enter "25 percent" as dots 2-3 (for 2), dots 2-6 (for 5), and dots
1-4-6 (for "percent".
d. Finally, press "Enter" to perform the calculation. 25 percent of 100 is 25.
Hope this helps. --Original Message -----
