Hi,
I received my new BrailleSense Plus qwerty and my new BookSense on Wednesday
and I've been learning how to use them.
I have spent more time with the BrailleSense Plus than the BookSense and I
have some questions:
1. When I'm reading the help files using contracted braille, the speech
will mispronounce some words like Alt-f4. If I change the grade to
uncontracted or computer braille, the word is pronounced right. Apparently,
the number sign is interpreted as the b-l-e sign. When a file is opened
using contracted braille, is it translated into braille on the fly so that
the speech engine interprets it as a braille file? I can't think of any
other reason for the speech to mispronounce the word alt-f4. I cannot
figure out a way to correct the speech. I have tried using the
pronunciation dictionary and entering the word in contracted braille, but
the BrailleSense Plus won't let me do this.
2. Can the speaker's voice be changed? I know Eloquence has 5 voices.
Does the BSPQ have all of them installed?
3. I would like GW Micro staff to take a good look at the help files for
the BSP qwerty. You would be appalled at all of the mistakes there are!
Many words are run together!
4. I have discovered that in order to read a document in compressed braille
I must manually change the setting to read-only. Just changing the setting
to "compressed" won't automatically turn it into a read-only document.
5. How can I search for format markers like hard returns, and replace them
with spaces? I would also like to be able to eliminate unnecessary page
breaks. How can I do this? Also, it woulb be nice if I could search for
font formats, too.
6. Can I open one file as compressed and read-only but open another in
original format? It seems I have to save all files either as read-only
compressed or original. The settings don't work when I don't apply them to
all files.
7. I have time and dates set to 12-hour, but when I read the information on
a file's time and date, the time and date are given in 24-hour format. Why
is this?
8. I have discovered that if I close a help file without putting the cursor
at the beginning of the document, the BSPQ will freeze when I try to open it
again, especially if I'm using contracted braille.
9. The section of the help file for the word processor about cutting text
is incorrect. It says the text will be erased when you use the command. In
fact, the text is cut and moved to the clipboard. Then, you can paste it
somewhere else.
10. I have discovered that if you change the reading unit to paragraph and
you also change the scroll buttons on either side to move by paragraph, the
up and down arrow keys will jump from one paragraph to another but the
scrolling keys won't.
11. I would like to see sentence by sentence navigation added to the
BrailleSense Plus. Many times, I don't understand a sentence I have read
and I would like to be able to jup to that sentence and read it again.
12. I would like to be able to set margins using inches instead of
millimeters. About how many characters per line and how many lines per page
do you have when the default settings are used?
So far, I'm very pleased with the BrailleSense Plus qwerty! I have more
comments, but it's getting late so I'll send them in a later post.
