Upgrading ce, with the specs of the current bsp, would not require a new
hardware version, just software, like the classic handled the jump from
ce2.12 to 4.2.

I can envision this being done. However, keep in mind that developing a
software for embedded systems architecture such as BSP needs to take account
the limitations of embedded systems in general. For general-purpose embedded
systems such as PDA's and smartphones, the big limitations would be RAM,
processing power, and adaptability of mainstream software to Windows
CE/Mobile platform.
As for BSP (or future versions) using Windows CE 6, I think it could have an
advantage. However, with the current market, I don't think so (BSP was only
released last year, and I don't think we'll see the new hardware version
until at least 2011).

BSP has CE 5.0 (Windows mobile 5.0/2005 technology), whereas Apex has
Windows Embedded CE 6.0 (Windows Mobile 7 technology). This is a huge
comparison (well, under the hood at low level), since Apex can run more
than
BSP can (in terms of process limit) and can handle more virtual memory.
The scroll wheel is ued to supplement thumb-keys when navigating a
document,
as well as to execute common functions such as instant help, changing
media
fast forward/rewind times and so forth (I bet HIMS will be surprised...).
As for software, Apex has KeySoft 9.0, which is essentially KeySoft 8.0
for
older guys but with CE6 OS underneath.
As for other "tech stuff," I don't want to talk about it in public...

controls: same as always (bsp has the media keys while Apex has the thumb
keys, but Apex now has a scroll wheel, which no one knows much about at
the
moment)
USB: Apex has 3 ports for external devices and one port for use with
activeSync and such; bsp has, I think, 1 of each type
Wifi/bluetooth: matched (built in, except I am not sure what the standard
on
the bsp is; Apex has bluetooth 2.1 and b/go wifi)
SDHC slot: matched (yes on both)
wired ethernet: yes on both
VGA port: yes on both
CF card slot: Apex does NOT have one, I am not sure about the bsp
keylock: Apex does not have this
FM radio: yes on both
replaceable battery: yes on both, though prices are unknown
LEDs to display status: bsp does not have this, but Apex has one for
bluetooth, one for wifi, and one to show charging/discharging status
processor: roughly matched (I think the bsp is at 520mhz, the Apex is
533mhz)
Operating System: bsp runs Windows CE 5.1 (I think), Apex runs Windows CE
6;
this removes many limitations on the Apex as far as multi-tasking goes,
plus
opens the door to future improvements like supporting powerpoint, Office
2007 files (not just Word either), and PDF files.
Software has not changed; Keysoft has not gotten any major new features,
at
least not that HW has announced. If it is like the mPower release, Apex
will
run a new version of keysoft, updated only to support the new hardware,
but
with no new features. The next keysoft release will likely be for PK,
mPower, and Apex units. Those of you who remember may recall the mPower
coming out after ks6.11; it ran ks6.2, and the next release, ks7.0, was
for
both the classic and mPower units. Hope this helps some.
