I have been trying to find a pattern since I sent my message, and it seems
that you are right.
I am finding that short strings are ok, but if I search for perhaps 5 or
more words, the machine almost always crashes.

Seems to me I recall several people reporting that a find will crash the
bs if the find-string is too long. Not sure what the maximum safe
length is. I usually do pretty short strings, so haven't really
experienced this too much.
