Steve,

It is likely that yre putting too much signal into the recorder.

I don't know how much attenuZ is involved if you use the "line in" setting, but 
you may be able ! use that setting but with a mike plugged. I know you might 
then not have sufficient volume.  The recorder is not a very good one at best, 
so do not expect a miracle.
