Hello all. We are working hard to bring you the next firmware for the
Voice Sense, Braille Sense Plus, and Braille Sense (Original)
notetakers. Although we are not yet saying when the firmware will be
released, I can say that it's getting very close. I had meant to send
this teaser this past Monday, but things have been very busy with
testing the SenseNav 2010 update and the Voice Sense Qwerty notetaker.
In addition, the teaser below is something which you have access to
right now, today, and you don't even have to wait for the new firmware.
So here it is.

Teaser 5: Using the NFB Newsline in your pocket software with the Sense
notetakers.

First off, if you already have a BookSense, all you need to do is insert
your SD card into the Sense notetaker and then tell the DAISY player to
load your publications which were copied over from the Pocket software.
However if you don't have a BookSense, you can still do this by
following the steps below.

The Pocket software can unofficially be used with the Sense notetakers
to automatically transfer your publications from your favorites list
into your Voice Sense or Braille Sense. The trick is to make the Pocket
software think you have a BookSense. Because this is a hack and
unofficially supported, you probably won't be able to get help from
NFBNewsline if the Pocket software doesn't transfer things correctly. So
how is this done? There are a few things you need to do to make this happen.

1. Open the file manager in your Voice Sense or Braille Sense and press
Enter on flashdisk.

2. Create 2 new folders called Documents and DAISY.

3. Arrow to the DAISY folder and press Enter.

4. Create a subfolder inside the DAISY folder and call it NFBNewsline.

5. Close the file manager and connect your Sense notetaker to the PC via
the USB cable.

Now your Voice Sense or Braille Sense will look like a BookSense when
the Pocket software searches for devices. Simply go to the NFB Newsline
Online site located at www.nfbnewslineonline.org and login with your
user code and pin. Download and install the Pocket software and add some
publications to your favorites. Our web site www.gwmicro.com has an
audio demonstration about how to briefly use this site and software to
transfer content to a BookSense, but the same will work as long as you
have the folder names above. Once you have run the software and
transferred content to it, it will be located inside the NFBNewsline
folder. Open the DAISY player and when it asks you for a book or DAISY
file to open, press Backspace until you reach the flashdisk. Press enter
on it and arrow to DAISY. Press Enter on that and you will see
NFBNewsline. Press Enter on that and now you will see the list of
publications the Pocket software copied to your Sense notetaker. Choose
one with the arrow keys and press Space followed by Enter to open it and
begin reading in the DAISY player.

While reading the publication, press dots-2-3 or dots-5-6 to choose a
movement level. Press dot-2 or dot-5 to move backward or forward by that
level. Please note that these hot keys are changing in the new 5.5
firmware when it is released.

As mentioned before, this works now without you having to wait for
version 5.5 of the new firmware to come out.

Happy reading.

Stay tuned for additional teasers in the next several days.

Many thanks.
