As far as I know, there is no limit on the size of the file you're sending. However, your SMTP server or that at the other end will restrict the file size. It's often 5 MB or so, but it could be lower. But if you're sending something like 4 MB, it can take a very long time. But if your message was successfully sent, you will find it in the "sent" folder.
As to receiving a file, the BS will skip download of a message with a file that is too large, and you have to use another computer to get it.
