Bruce,

The best option for VB development really depends on the kind of apps you intend to write. For simple stuff, Notepad and the vbc command-line compiler work well. For anything else, though, the VB IDE is the way to go. You may also find #Develop (pronounced "Sharp Develop") of interest as it's a fully featured alternative to Visual Studio. Version 3 looked to be pretty usable, but I haven't checked the 4.x series since I have Visual Studio Professional these days.

My recommendation, especially if you're in an academic setting, is to stick with the Visual Studio environment. That's what you will be taught, and that's what 99% of professional software developers use when working on Win32 or .net applications.

HTH,
Steve

I think you are talking about the Visual.web file, correct? I was in class when I sent the message and had all downloads on my home computer and could not check if it was there, my mistake. But I did not install the VB software until today. Another question, is there a better VB free package that is just as good as VB Studio 2008? Anyway, I will transfer all downloads to my notebook and see if it works.
        Thanks!
        Bruce

Download the VS 2008 package from Script Central. You will need to
associate the VS2008.vbs file with VB Express, but once done, the
    combination works quite well.
