I think either a window is the right thing to do. Or have it in always- on-top mode, so I can copy and paste from the window in the background.

A common scenario for me is to want to tweet something and paste a URL. I don't always have the URL pre-copied when I start writing, so I tend to alt+tab to the browser to get it. When I do this, I loose the update status window (can't alt+tab back) and all my input has been lost.
