They are separate. GWT 2.1 includes a GWT implementation of the
java.util.logging APIs while gwt-log continues to provide a log4j inspired
API and log levels.

gwt-log has a ton of features, many of which are also represented in GWT's
logging implementation, so there's a lot of overlap. There are still trade
offs though.

You should feel free to use either.
