Try a Log.fatal("test")

The log message you are seeing is the access log. If you expand that in the
admin console, you will see any log messages there.

Also, try logging in your servlet using the standard method
http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/runtime.html#Logging so confirm
that you can see those messages in the admin console.
