Yes, that's the current situation. It would be nice if someone put together a Delaunay/Voronoi triangulation-based regularization for the import of general XYZ data to Gwyddion as this question is recurring. Linear interpolation within the cells would probably suffice for most. Unfortunately, I am occupied with more mundane things like the import of all the SPM file formats people have managed to invent...
