For me it works fine with the regular mac X11 (I don't have the
xorg-server port installed).  What version of the mac X11 did you try
it with?  For me when I go to "About X11" it says XQuartz 2.3.5
(xorg-server 1.4.2-apple53).

I assume the gtkglext dependency (and its dependencies) all installed
properly with macports?
