Yes, apparently Petr has never actually implemented the None mode.

Ah, the thumbnail is not updated after any [purely] mask change.  This
does not seem so easy to fix but it should be possible while increasing
the ugliness of data browser code by a finite amount.  I will look into
it.

For height-based thresholding you can do this directly using Mark With
instead.  For other operations, well, it would be nice if all mask
operations allowed choosing what to do with the existing maks...  At
least it is possible by saving the first mask using Extract Mask first
and then using Mark With.
