I probably have to consider Rolf, who had been maintaining the MacPorts port of Gwyddion for a long time, AWOL. The last time I actually got a reply from him was in 2014. I do not know if anyone else is willing to pick up the port maintenance (should be relatively low-stress) or what happens if you just fill a request to update to a newer version in MacPorts and there is no active maintainer. What I know is that if no one is maintaining the port things will stall eventually. So, this is not much of an answer, it is more a request for help. Gwyddion is a project with long lifespan and maintainers of specific ports and packages may come and go...
