Riding in the Rain ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We hope it won't happen, but there is a chance of scattered rain. Don't let
that stop you from having run and riding safely. Here is a quick lesson is
rain cycling provided by our Bike MS RouteMaster Paul Nevill:
Riding in the rain is dangerous, and many cyclists shun bad weather riding
so much that they have little experience in handling the bike during wet
conditions. The easiest explanation I give to people about riding a bike in
the rain is that it is similar to driving a car on ice. There are
similarities when it comes to braking, control, sudden movements, turning,
and speed. Plus, rain reduces a cyclist's visibility.

So how can you deal with the situation of riding in the rain - at least
until you can get to a safe stopping point? I've compiled this short list
of hints:
The first few minutes of a rain storm are the most dangerous for slick
pavement, due to built-up of oil on the pavement that comes to the surface
of the water before it washes off. As soon as the road gets damp, you must
slow your reaction time to everything. This includes riding with a group:
Slow down! Spread out! Don't draft!
During the rain, smooth actions are safer than sudden ones. Signal well
before any change in direction - even if you are just avoiding a pothole.
Use common sense. If you can't see anything, you're in danger for yourself
and from others. If lightning is flashing nearby, get under low shelter
(NOT a tree!).
Finally, avoid puddles. I know that when you are completely soaked, it
seems like a little more water splashing won't make a difference, but it
actually does. Water build-up spraying heavily from the spinning tires can
reach damaging spots on the bike like the handlebar head set, your computer
and underneath the seatpost. You might hit a hidden pothole. Also, the
front tire can spray your face, even if you have a hood and rain jacket on.
Remember that on the right side of the road, the right tires of vehicles
cause a depression in the road about 2-3 feet from the edge of the pavement.
You can actually be safer and dryer if you ride close to the edge of the
pavement during the rain than further over to the left.
