It was pretty tough at times for sure. I have not done 3 Mountain
Madness to compare it to that, but yes, definitely a compact crank. My
53 x 39 and 12-27 cassette was a bit too big. I spent all the climbs
in the lowest gear, or the second lowest. Honestly, maybe just having
a few easier gears on the rear cassette would have been acceptable.
The nice thing is we did 3 climbs and all were out and back, so anyone
could choose not to do any of the climbs if they didn't want to do
them.
The whole route we did was never a single lane. We did not do the
whole Tour de Gaps route, but only the first three climbs of it. The
descents were amazingly fast and traffic was very minimal.
