When the group came upon the hole I feel that the lead rider/riders should have been more careful. Everybody should have slowed down and proceeded cautiously. Once it became clear to the riders in the back people where all over the road. With a car coming in the other lane -- not everybody could squeeze past the hole in time before the oncoming car arrived causing some to slow way down or stop. It is like a pack of riders going through a stop light. The light turns red and someone in the group stops. It is the law -- do not run red lights. If you are behind that rider/riders that stop and you run into that stopped rider -- well -- if I hit someone from behind I know it's my fault. Rule of the road says if your car is hit by another car from behind -- it is the car from behind that is at fault. Not to blame one person for anything -- there was a series of events that caused what happened. There needs to be better communication and unless we keep a better eye on the road and fellow riders accidents will happen. Wendy did not hit anyone-- she was hit. I am not saying this because of who I am. I am saying this because after 25 plus years of road racing training I have a pretty good feel for road educate. I was also within 10 ft. Of what happened. I do not want to ruffle any feathers -- just want to ride and have fun. Um, yeah, stopping in the lane in a paceline is NOT the way to go. I hope that someone made that clear to her at the time so it dosen't happen again. I also hope that those roads are fixed quickly so we don't have to deal with it most of the riding season but we are dealing with the dot so you know how that goes especially in Durham County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Itchn2go - Ed" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 09, 2009 8:24 AM Subject: [Gyros: 12362] Re: today's ride and pothole lookout First, I think we should change the route until coley and kemp are fixed. This will be Kim’s call but Maria, in my opinion, made a good suggestion: Carpenter Pond R Kemp L Coley R Carpenter Pond R Virgil L Kemp Continue as normal. The biggest factor that caused this was the on coming car (in addition to the torn up road). The car was approaching at a slow rate which narrowed the lane to go around the torn up road. I had a rider on my outside so I could not go left without taking him down. Wendy came to a stop and I ran into her at a very slow pace but an accident still happened. I’m not the expert here but it seems coming to a complete stop in a double pace line is dangerous and should be avoided at all cost. It is better to change your line, ride through the obstacle, or if the rider is on the inside go for the grass on the right (same as changing the line) then come to a stop. If that cannot be done letting the people behind you know you are stopping must be made loud and clear. To Logan’s comments about yelling hole and the size expected: I am not sure what the riders up front could have done different other than getting the on coming car to stop (good luck with that) so we had the lane to go around the obstacle. My back and neck are sore but I will live.
