David,

I have been several times. A friend and I are actually planning our 3rd
annual trip. We leave on early Monday, May 18th and return on May 21st. In
the past we have camped at Beartree (
http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/mr/recreation/camping/beartree.shtml )
campground. This year we are renting a cabin. Cabin is next to trail near
Green Cove. Cabin sleeps 7 we have 3 firm commits.

Subject: [Gyros: 12427] Virginia Creeper Trail - March 21st and 22nd

Gyros,

I am new to the Gyros as of three weeks ago. So far the two touring rides I
have been on have been very enjoyable.

A work buddy and I are planning on riding the Virginia Creeper Trail on
March 21st and 22nd.

See the link listed below for more information:

http://www.vacreepertrail.com/

The Virginia Creeper Trail is a rails to trails path that extends 35 miles
from Abingdon, VA to the VA/NC State Line near White Top, VA. The path is
hard packed gravel and dirt.

My wife and rode the trail back in October when the leaves were changing and
it was beautiful. The surrounding terrain is mostly rolling hills and
farmland. There is 15 mile stretch going to White Top, VA that averages a
5% grade. Shuttle services from local bike shops are available to take you
to White Top, VA if you are only interested on coasting downhill in lieu of
climbing. The link listed above is a great resource for any information you
may need.

See attached pictures.

Mountain, hybrid, or cyclocross bikes are the weapons of choice on this
trip. Road bikes with slicks are not recommended.

The plan is to either go up there early in the morning on the 21st or the
night before depending on how people feel about leaving early in the morning
to drive 4 hours to Abingdon.

We would ride the trail to the end and back (70 miles) on the 21st.

Since it is basketball tournament time, I figure after a hard days work we
could find a watering hole in Abingdon to quench our thirsts, eat, and watch
some basketball.

I know where an Irish Pub is in Abingdon.

Since it will be a long day, the plan is to get rooms in Abingdon to stay
the night and then we all drive home on Sunday morning.

I am throwing this out there that if there are any Gyros interesting in
going you are more than welcome to come. Let me know if you have any
questions.

Enjoy the day, -David
