NC has very strict "Dangerous Dog" laws. The actions of the dogs that
caused yesterdays crash should not be taken lightly. There are legal
provisions to deal not only with the dogs, but the dog owners as well.
The owners are liable for any injuries sustained by persons or
property involving their dogs off premises.

1) Call the police or sheriff’s dept. immediately, and insist that
they press charges.

2) Discuss the dangerous dog registry with the police or sheriff’s
dept., and the animal control officer. They may not know it, but the
dangerous dog law can be applied if a person is injured by a dog in
any way, not limited to bites.

3) Know that any conviction for a leash law violation and use of the
dangerous dog registry will help you get compensated for your medical
expenses, and property damage to your bike and clothing — from the dog
owner’s insurance company, or in civil or small claims court.

According to the "ride report" there were multiple witnesses to
yesterday's crash and the dog owner's admitted to their dog's
behavior. They also did not offer any assistance or aid which leaves
them wide open to a lawsuit.

At the very least, call an attorney well versed in animal liability
laws and please...if you don't want to follow up on dog induced bike
crashes then don't "bitch" (no pun intended) about it later.

This is a perfect opportunity for the Gyros to be proactive as
advocates for cyclist's rights.
