I just talked to Grier Martin about this bill. It was voted out of
committee this morning for several reasons mostly because this would have an
impact on how municipalities deal with cyclist, i.e. Commuting. This may
be off the radar screen for now but we need to keep a look out for it.

Try calling his office too at (919) 733-5758. I just listed all of the
reasons this bill can't work the way it's listed and then asked for complete
streets, no maximum bike across in a lane, full access to the entire lane,
and the Idaho stop/traffic signal law.

  Thanks,

Thanks for the info. Barney, I just sent my concerns to Grier Martin. We
all need to do something and express our concern to this guy and maybe he
can help if he see that there are many of us who cares.

If anyone is interested, you can go to the link that brad and kirk
sent that has the board members on it and from there you can search
you rep (based on zip code) and the email him/her directly. I just did
this and my rep got back to me thanking me for thr "heads up"
  regarding the proposed new section.

  Do it.

  Everyone:

There's a nasty bill in the transportation committee, and if we don't
fight now, we just might lose the right to ride in a two abreast line
  on the road with cars...

[Update added 5/10/10] Here's the draft text (it is likely to be
  amended before any votes):

SECTION 1. Chapter 20 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a
  new section to read:
"ยง 20-171.3. Operation of bicycles on streets and highways. Bicyclists
riding bicycles upon a street or highway shall not ride more than two
abreast, except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the
exclusive use of bicycles. Persons riding two abreast shall not impede
the normal and reasonable movement of traffic and, on a laned roadway,
shall ride within a single lane. Persons riding two abreast shall move
into a single file formation as quickly as is practicable when being
overtaken from the rear by a faster moving vehicle..
