Apparently the "two abreast" law discussed in today's N&O was unanimously advanced out of the Transportation Committee in the NC Senate today. The law is a two-sentence change that makes it unlawful for cyclists to ride more than two abreast, period. I emailed the Senator who represents many of us in north Raleigh, Neal Hunt, to ask him to oppose it in committee, to no avail. Maybe it's because I'm a Democrat . . . So to all of my Republican Gyro brethren (and I know you are legion), please email your man at [email protected] to ask him to reconsider his support or to at least consider comprehensive legislation that would improve safety for everyone (like making it a misdemeanor to harass cyclists and increasing the passing buffer from 2 to 3 feet away from riders). Or if you are an opponent of "big government" generally, surely you can prevail upon the Senator that fiddling around with how many bikes can be perpendicular to the shoulder is a little much. Or invite him on a Gyros ride!
