from an email w/ a friend of mine this past fall:
We ended up driving to Marion (~ 30 min) and riding to top of Mt. Mitchell
(? highest peak in NC) instead. Don't know the roads, but it seemed quite
simple and through some very picturesque sceenery the whole way. This was my
first and so far only mountain ride, and my friend was consideralbly slower,
but I recall the 30 mi to the summitt was about 3 hours of pain, and the
tirp back down was about 1 hour of panic with frequent breaking to keep it <
40mi/hr. A studly A rider like yourself could likely make it up in 2hrs, and
still have time for a capucinno at the top. And I have to admit, this was
about the most fun one can have with your clothes on (which you will likely
need at the summit even in late June). If interested, I'll ask my friend Bob
for a cue sheet.

Subject: possible bicycle ride w/Kevin

Kevin,

While you and Susan are in Asheville, I would like it if you would join me
for a bike ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I suggest that we ride from
Asheville up to the Pisgah Inn at mile post 408.6. I generally ride down
Highway 25 out of Asheville to get to the parkway. Once you are on the
Parkway near mile post 390.7, the ride to Pisgah is approx. 18 miles. The
route goes through about five tunnels; thus, you will need a flashing light.
I have many fond memories of biking to Pisgah and we can enjoy the view with
a good cup of coffee at the Inn. I am guessing that it will take two to
three hours to ride there and an hour for the return ride. If time does not
permit a ride to the Pisgah Inn we could take a shorter ride to the NC
Arboretum which is near mile post 393.

Kris and I are staying at the Doubletree Hotel near Biltmore Village. We
could leave from the hotel and ride about 4 miles to the entrance of the
parkway or we could park the cars at a shopping center closer to the parkway
to avoid biking through the city.
