I don't know Donna, Fernando might agree that the IM bug is a bit addictive :) You might find yourself pining for another one, not today, but sometime..... :) mary

I am very happy and relieved to report that I did endure MY ONE MY ONLY Ironman distance triahlon - I'M no Fernando and it has given me a new appreciation and excitement for the 1/2 IM distance that I'll continue with. The swim was formitable to say the least. I've never done a mass start so that was an experience (approximately 650) and then there were the headwinds and then the waves. I actually got a little seasick with combination waves and salt water. I ended up side-stroking the last 500 yards to the ladder and what a relief that transition dock was to my eyes. On to the bike which was mostly flat with again . . . headwinds which were with us the majority of the ride. I was stopped at mile 75 when I see Fernando whiz on by. I hopped on my bike trying to catch him but he was gone like a flash. I thought that was the end of Fernando but came upon him about 10 miles down the road where he was changing his flat but Fernando being the athlete he is I knew I would see him again and I did. We came upon each other on the run with friend Carlos Escobar helping out with Sherpa duties (I had my amazing friend Gina with me). But he eventually took off and we said Hi on the 2 loops we had to do. I was happy about my marathon time. I only ran a handful of times in training and did no bike to run workouts so I was really nervous that I could finish in the alloted 17 hours. My friend Gina ran with me part of the way and there were moments when I felt really good jogging along. Overall I did a 14:46 so not bad for a first-timer and what a long long day. My main reason for writing is to thank you all for your encouragement and support. It was so helpful to have Marc and Dave Campbell to talk to about their IM experiences and share my fears and concerns with and get such encouraging feedback. Thank you everyone for all your support and especially to those who gave financially to Hospice of Wake County and so many of you attended the wine tasting held at Taylor's this past year. I was inspired by the life of my sister-in-law, Kathy Short who our family lost to breast cancer who endured so much during her four year battle so I do dedicate this to her. I'm really tired right now so hoping this makes sense as fatigue and lactic acid is racing through my veins. But what an incredible journey this has been.
