I mapped out this ride about 2 years ago and have talked to a few of
you about doing it sometime. I grew up in Asheboro but now live in
Raleigh and thought it would be fun to ride door to door from my house
to my parents house.

To make a long story short, I decided to do it on Veteran’s Day in
honor of my father who passed away earlier this year. I had planned
to do it solo, just take my time and spend a day on the bike.
Fortunately I have two good friends that basically showed up
unannounced on the route to ride with me. One local guy that paced me
from Raleigh to 15/501 then another friend rode from Asheboro to Hwy
87 near Pittsboro then paced me back to Asheboro. If not for them I
may still be out there somewhere pedaling along back country roads. I
had roughly an hour of riding solo and began to question “What are you
doing out here? You’re not even halfway yet?” That’s when I crested
a hill and ran into my friend waiting to pace me back.

It’s not an easy route. I would even call one 6-7 mile stretch at the
end "brutal". And it being November I don’t have many training miles
in my legs. My friends and family are telling me to make this an
annual event. Hopefully I will not wait until Veteran’s Day 2011 to
do this again. I’m throwing it out there now as a ride option for the
future. The biggest hurdle is the logistics of getting everyone and
their bicycles back to Raleigh.

Here is a link for the route and I have a cue sheet if anyone is
interested. The route starts in the North Hills shopping center which
is near my house and ends about a mile from where my mom lives so in
total it was around 87-88 miles. (My cyclocomputer went haywire so I
did not have accurate mileage or mph numbers.)
