I am so sorry to hear about the wreck and injuries, I hope every one
recovers well. Must be tough dealing with 4 cracked ribs. If there is anything
I
can do from the skin end please let me know.
When people are recovering from an incident like this, they are full of
emotions, pain, sadness, anger , guilt etc. Having wrecked bikes does not
help. Then to add salt to the wound you see a comment from some smart ASS
cyclist who critiques the skill of the riders involved, it shows arrogance and
complete lack of compassion. When a car cuts off the leading rider as
described, the second rider will most likely hit the leader's rear wheel
whether or not the wheels were overlapping, then the domino effect occurs. I do
not care if these are cat 1,2, 3 ,4 riders. It happens.
I am glad there were no serious injuries and ignore idiotic comments, there
is a time and place to educate us if we need any improvement in our skills
but not right after a crash. Some of us need lessons in skills but some
need lessons in sensitivity.

The driver may have been an "idiot" as you say, but from reading the
first hand accounts of what actually happened, it's obvious that the
motor vehicle in question did not contact any of the bike riders. If
the second bike rider in the pace line had not over lapped the rear
wheel of the first bike rider in the pace line with her front wheel,
this probably could have all been avoided.

I rode race paced training rides with Cat 2/3 Men in California for a
number of years and it's far safer to ride with a fast race group than
a slow social group because the racer crowd knows how to ride fast but
safe, even with traffic buzzing all around.
