I will add that if we use a mission statement to recruit people to the
h-costume list, the old one was great except Facebook did not exist
then. The many costume groups on Facebook are largely show and tell.
If people want that there is no reason to leave Facebook. So I think it
is important to say this group is for longer and more substantive
discussions than the Facebook format allows, not just for people to post
photos and have everyone say they love the outfit. Let alone posting
photos and have everyone tear it down.
As for cautionary tales: Amazon used to host a ton of forums on various
subjects. I belonged to a very active and interesting forum related to
books. Amazon decided they no longer wanted to support forums, so the
book forum and many others disappeared. People who had loved the book
forum were very disappointed. So, different people created different
forums on three different platforms, each supposed to be a follow-on of
the original forum. That was at least a year ago, and none of those
forums has taken off. The one I see most often has about six active users.
