I was definitely using 'allegorical' as shorthand, since it's the most 
common term used on this list for the type of thing I'm seeking.  I'm 
looking for images of saints, foreigners, religious figures, historical 
figures, allegorical figures, and even royalty depicted in clothing that is, 
for one reason or another, not what would have been worn by any actual human 
being of that time period.  I'm also looking for fashions that are odd 
enough that it would take a lot of proof to call them realistic.  But that 
takes a lot longer to say. =}  I do ask in different terms on a list like 
this than I would ask in, say, a museum.  However, it is certainly good to 
make that distinction--especially since I'm looking for as large a subset as 
possible!
