I take about a yard of a fine white cotton cloth, about a foot wide. I fold it
on the diagonal, place the middle about half way down my forehead, twist the
two ends and then wrap them around the back of my head (at the nape of the
neck) and around to the front and tuck them in. The fabric on top of the head
tucks into the twisted wrap in the back so that the whole head is covered. This
creates a bulkier headwrap than others have described, but not out of period as
I've seen similar things in paintings. Another way is to take the two twisted
ends, cross them in the back, twist them more and make a figure eight at the
nape of my neck and tuck in the eges. This creates a smooth front and top,
while the knot in the back is hidden by the veil. Veils and wimples pin to it
very easily. I have short, very fine and slippery hair and this works very
well. I actually wear this heapwrap by itself quite a bit, unless I'm being
formal.... Gytha

Here's what I do to get veils to stay in place.

I have a little square white cloth which I fold in half to make a sort of
kerchief. On the corners, I sewed white ties. This looks like the kind of
little fashionable scarves or kerchiefs teen girls wear. I suppose you could
use one of those, but they're generally bright and patterned.

I put the folded edge of this kerchief over my forehead. Then I pull the
ties back behind my neck, cross them, and tie them either at the back of my
neck (if the veil is sheer) or on the top of my head (if I'm wearing a hat
that needs anchoring). The kerchief is just big enough that the back point
comes to the nape of my neck, and that gets tucked into the cords/ties. I
hope that makes sense.

I got this idea from the Elizabethan forehead cloth. It works for me because
I have very short hair and it keeps the bangs hidden, it is a nice anchor
for a coronet or circlet, and it is something for the veil pins to stick to.
And also, it's a lot easier to make than a cap.
