Bjarne,
I can understand your worries. I'm going to be spending a week in
Washington, D.C. at the Hyatt Crystal City. This hotel is right next to
Reagan/National Airport. Only a few miles from the Pentagon (an old friend
was at ground zero on 9/11. He survived Viet Nam and was working to make
life easier for other veterans) and the White House. The conference is
government run and covers the US military health care system.
While there I intend to spend every free second in the Smithsonian or on
the subway getting there. Ground zero for the latest terrorists junkies.
I'm simply not worried. Do I believe that it can't happen to me? No, I
don't believe that. What I do believe is that the chance that I will at
that particular place at that particular time is so small that it doesn't
rate a worry.
Granted, I don't take the tube every day, but I'm not so sure how much
that
really increases your change of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The death toll in London is around 50. Far worse, the injured is around
700. This from a number of commuters/tourists/shoppers that probably
numbers in the many thousands. The chances against being one of them must
have been miniscule. Much less than your chance of being run over riding
your bike to work the next day!
At any event, this is blackmail. The schoolyard bullies beating up on
one
person and threatening the rest "if you don't tow the line, next time this
will be you!" The choice is to crawl to their demands or to stand up like
grown ups and refuse to be bullied into accepting their way "or else!"
Don't you dare take this personally because it isn't meant for you Oh
Great
Dane (grin - that's a joke)! The English have had a saying for nearly 1000
years: "If you pay Danegeld, you never get rid of the Dane." These
terrorists want their variety of Danegeld. If they get it, they will be
back again, and again.
I've always had the highest respect for the Danish people. They stood
up
to the greatest bullies of the last century, the Nazi's and did what they
believed was right. Probably the only country in the world that came out of
WWII with the moral high ground intact.
Do I believe that all the US is doing is right? No, and neither do a
large
share of Americans. However, I don't see that letting the terrorists who
are willing to massacre completely innocent people to get their way as
anyone I want to hand the world over to either.
Love your embroidery. Hope the ladies purses go over well. Hope the
weather cools down soon since I'll be spending three weeks in
September/October in England and Scotland (one whole week in London!)
