It's very difficult to get a straight cut with scissors, at least for
me--I end up with wide-mouthed Vs.  There is a bit of an irregularity
with the chisel, but it's still much less noticeable than with scissors.

Also, for what I'm doing and how I do it, it helps to see a good portion
of the fabric arrayed before me.

Actually the chisel worked so well that I've started try to think where
else a similar arrangement might work out--similar to your usage of a
gouge to make dags.
