Stick a pin across where you want to stop. I always do that to avoid
ripping the stitching when opening up machined buttonholes.

but I was alway taught at college not to use seam rippers for slashes and
buttinholes, as it takes extreme care to avoid going further than intended.
(that said, I never had that problem.)
