You certainly could...but I've seen very plain period bonnets and hats also.  
I think you should leave this one as it is.

My recollection of 1870s hair styles is that they were generally pulled back, 
away from the face (except for perhaps a fringe of curls along the forehead) 
and cascaded down the back of the head in curls, many of which were 
hairpieces.  I think your style is generally fine, though I would pull the 
hair back a bit more tightly from my face for less of a poofy, pompadoured 
"Gibson Girl" effect.  

Tuese illustrations from the 1875 issue of Peterson's magazine may give you a 
better idea of what I'm trying to say (illustrations courtesy of the

Looking at these, I see that you might also want to give your hair an overall 
permanent for more waves and body, to better simulate the period look.  Have 
fun experimenting!
